Gymnast and two-time olympic gold medalist, Carlos Edriel P. Yulo is the featured image of DA-Philippine Rice Research Institute’s (DA-PhilRice) 2024 wet season rice paddy art.
The 1500㎡ artwork, located at the FutureRice Farm in Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija, was revealed to more than thousand farmers and students during the Institute’s recent two-day Lakbay Palay.
Planted in August using NSIC Rc 596 and the traditional purple rice IR1522, the paddy art employed the anamorphosis design principle—an art technique that creates a distorted image that appears normal from a specific angle.
Laarnie L. Mandia, head of the Community Relations Office, shared that Yulo was selected because of the “immense pride he has brought to the country through his achievements in sports.”
Mandia expressed hope that Yulo’s story will continue to inspire young people, emphasizing his dedication and resilience in overcoming life’s challenges to achieve his dreams.
This is the 19th paddy art created by PhilRice in Nueva Ecija, which began the tradition in 2015. Past paddy art features have included prominent figures like Dr. Jose Rizal, Manny Pacquiao, Catriona Gray, and former Vice President Leni Robredo, all selected for their contributions to Filipino culture and national pride.
