The National Rice Awareness Month (NRAM) conducted every November has focused on increasing awareness on youth participation in agriculture and rice production processes during the 21st Ceremonial Rice Harvesting at the Luneta Park, Nov. 17. James Elwyn Leyte, senior research associate at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture - Philippines, motivated about 200 students from Salawag National High School in Dasmariñas, Cavite, to pursue careers in agricultural research and development. “Agriculture is not merely a venture but an enticing career prospect. It offers vast career opportunities as agricultural engineers, scientists, programmers [and other career paths you wish to take] whether here in our country or around the globe. You can also be entrepreneurial in agriculture. With digital innovation, opportunities are limitless,” he explained. The students also experienced planting and harvesting rice for the first time and were introduced to plastic drum seeder, which makes direct-seeding efficient. Fifteen-year-old Kryshna Cielo Batayola reflects on her first-time experience at the event, saying, “This event enlightened me about the challenges farmers endure, fostering a commitment to being RICEponsible. The informative booths offered entertainment and knowledge, and I’m eager to share insights on rice varieties, planting techniques, and other fruits and vegetables with others.” Jundy Canata, another student, enthusiastically expressed that his experience with planting and harvesting rice was the most enjoyable aspect of the event for him. Dr. Karen Eloisa Barroga, Philippine Rice Research Institute deputy executive director for development, said that this is the first time that the Institute invited a school outside Metro Manila through Kiwanis International Philippine Luzon District. “I hope this experience fosters your understanding of agriculture. Always remember Lola K’s reminder to be RICEponsible by following the messages of our ABKD: (A) Adlay, mais, saba, atbp. ay ihalo sa kanin; (B) Brown rice ay kainin; (K) Kanin ay huwag sayangin; at (D) Dapat bigas ng Pilipinas ang bilhin,” she emphasized. The NRAM advocacy was also featured in the three-day Cashless Expo 2023 event at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.
